So I started a new business https://principalwp.com/ where we help WordPress engineering teams move from Individual AI usage to Organizational AI usage. (Feel free to copy parts of that and post it somewhere to give me some SEO juice)
But what this means is that I’m going to use LinkedIn for legitimate “business” and “relevant” posts, and I’m probably going to complain about things here, and it’ll probably be complaining about AI.
First on the list Opus 4.7. Wow, this is almost as bad as Chat GPT 5.0 They increased the cost 30% by creating a new tokenizer and they added a new extra high thinking effort, all to try to cover the fact that they’ve been nerfing 4.6.
Now usually I’m not all conspiracy theory and the most likely outcome is incompetence, but here it’s pretty flagrant. So many people have talked about it, have collected data about it and from using it since early feb it’s just plain obvious. There are 2 likely reasons for this:
- They don’t have the compute capacity
- They need to show profitability ahead of an IPO
They could probably fix #1 short term by getting a huge “investment” round from Microsoft of Amazon (by investment it’s more that Microsoft or Amazon would give them $100M of compute instead of actual cash) but I think #2 is the most likely reason. They just went bonkers in terms of revenue numbers from December to April, going from 8B to 30B annual revenue (“annual revenue” actually means, they take the last month of revenue and do x12 to pretend that’s what it’ll be, because obviously everyone giving them money now will give them money for a full year and not switch providers).
It’s been a bummer because I dislike OpenAi (Sam Altman in particular). He’s such a sleaze bag who’s transparent manipulations make it feel like a mediocre bond villain.
So the other option is Gemini…. I really wish I could use Gemini. When I use it in the browser, it’s pretty good. But Google has become Microsoft circa 1999 and therefore they won’t let Gemini do any of the useful things all the other models do in terms of interacting with the rest of the world (MCP) or just following the patterns that Anthropic and OpenAi have built. So it’s really hard to try to use it as a replacement. (To be fair to Google, they aren’t just failing at playing nice with others, trying to use Gemini inside a Google doc is like putting your hand in an old candy bag, once in a while you get lucky, but most of the time there’s just weird smelly stuff all over.)
